A hand placing a piece on a board, Downtown Cairo through the window behind

Our story

It started with one coffee
and one chessboard.

Downtown Cairo, May 2026. Two friends, a board between them, and a question nobody had answered.

One — the question

Why isn't there a place for this?

We're Nora Gamil and Sherif AlHarony. We've worked together for years, and today we run our advertising agency, NASx, together.

One afternoon in Downtown Cairo we were having coffee and playing chess, the way we usually do. And a simple question came up that neither of us could answer: why isn't there a place in this city where people can just meet, play, and enjoy the game together?

Nobody had made one. So we decided to.

Two — the name

Where the X came from.

We took a few photos that day. Nora did what she does best and turned them into the beginning of a brand. We made the pages, started posting, and called it X Chess Club.

The X comes from NASx, where we use it for whatever comes next.

This was our next thing.

The very first X Chess Club gathering, 31 May 2026

Six days later,
we had our first gathering.

Three — the first Saturday

People came, and then they stayed.

They played. They met each other. And then they stayed — long after the games had finished, still around the boards, still talking.

That was the answer to our question. There was a community in Cairo looking for exactly this: a good place, good people, and somewhere comfortable to play chess face to face.

So we kept going.

Four — every week since

A chessboard is very good at starting conversations.

The gatherings got bigger. New faces joined, familiar faces came back, and we watched a board do something we didn't expect: start conversations between people who had never met before.

Dozens of gatherings later, we've run our first tournaments too. Nora still brings the creative touch to everything you see from X Chess Club. Sherif takes care of the chess, the gatherings, and holding it all together.

We want to bring more people around the board, and keep watching this community grow.

Let's see what comes next.

It started with one coffee and one chessboard. Come play — we'll find you a game.
